Quick Answer: The best-researched probiotic strains for weight loss are Akkermansia muciniphila, Lactobacillus gasseri, Bifidobacterium lactis B420, and the Lab4P blend, each with human trials showing reduced body weight, body fat, or waist circumference. A 2026 randomized controlled trial in Nature Medicine found pasteurized A. muciniphila cut post-diet weight regain by roughly two-thirds compared to placebo. My personal go-to pick has changed since I first wrote this post — my original favorite, Pendulum Metabolic Daily Pro, has been discontinued, so I now recommend Akkermansia Pro GLP-1 Probiotic™ or Metagenics UltraFlora Control. Full brand-by-brand picks are below.
Probiotics are one of the more exciting frontiers in weight management, and for good reason. The bacteria living in your gut do far more than digest food — they help regulate appetite hormones, inflammation, and how many calories you actually absorb from what you eat.
Not everyone responds the same way to probiotics for weight loss, and results depend heavily on which strain you’re taking. Adding a probiotic with strains specifically researched for weight management is a smart move if you’re trying to lose weight or, just as important, keep it off after you’ve lost it.
In this post, I cover the research-backed probiotic strains for weight loss, walk through what a major new 2026 clinical trial found about the most-studied strain, and share my picks for the best probiotics for weight loss by brand — based on the research, product formulation, and my own experience as a dietitian.

What Are Probiotics?
Probiotics are live bacteria or microorganisms that help promote overall health. Many types are found naturally in fermented foods, and they’re also widely available in supplement form.
Even beyond weight management, probiotics are good for overall health. They can reduce the risk of urinary tract infections, reduce acid reflux, reduce candida infections, and support brain health.
These healthy bacteria are generally recognized as safe, but if you have severe immune compromise, you should avoid probiotic supplements. Always check with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement, including probiotics.
How Long Does It Take for Probiotics to Work?
Research shows it takes at least 12 weeks to observe a measurable decrease in body weight from probiotic use. About 40% of probiotic users see a greater than 5% loss of body weight over a period of roughly 6 months.
Personally, I notice that probiotics containing Akkermansia muciniphila work more quickly than that — and newer research helps explain why, and who is most likely to respond.
New for 2026: What the Latest Akkermansia Trial Actually Found
This is the most important update to this post. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in Nature Medicine in 2026 tackled a question that matters more than initial weight loss: can a probiotic help you keep weight off?
Ninety adults with overweight or obesity first completed an 8-week low-calorie diet to lose at least 8% of their body weight. They then spent 24 weeks in a weight-maintenance phase, taking either daily pasteurized Akkermansia muciniphila MucT or a placebo, with no calorie restriction. The group taking the probiotic regained an average of just 1.2 kg, compared to 3.2 kg in the placebo group. Roughly 40% of the probiotic group kept losing weight during maintenance, compared to only about 5% of the placebo group, and no treatment-related side effects were reported.
A separate 2025 Cell Metabolism study on Akkermansia and baseline gut levels adds an important nuance: Akkermansia supplementation worked best in people who started with low baseline levels of the bacteria in their own gut. People who already had healthy Akkermansia levels didn’t see the same added benefit — which is a good reminder that “test, don’t guess” applies to your microbiome too, not just your food sensitivities.
What Are the Best Probiotic Strains for Weight Loss?
Research clearly shows that probiotics help with weight management. A 2026 meta-analysis on probiotic supplementation for body weight management, pooling randomized controlled trials predominantly from East Asia, confirmed that probiotic supplementation supports body weight reduction, though the effect size varies significantly by strain, dose, and duration. A separate 2025 meta-analysis on probiotics for body weight and visceral fat, covering 8 RCTs and 412 patients, found probiotics produced significantly greater weight loss, waist circumference reduction, and visceral fat reduction than placebo (all P < 0.01), with the strongest evidence behind Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus coagulans, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus plantarum, and Lactobacillus rhamnosus.
Probiotics also help people with metabolic syndrome, a condition that often drives weight issues. Not every strain helps equally, though — Lactobacillus acidophilus taken on its own may actually promote weight gain, since it doesn’t effectively break down glucose or fructose.
Here are the best-researched strains of probiotic bacteria for weight loss:
- Akkermansia muciniphila is the strain with the strongest 2025–2026 evidence behind it. It improves glucose and fat metabolism, and people with naturally higher levels have reduced risk of obesity, diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease. The 2026 Nature Medicine trial found it significantly reduces weight regain after dieting, and a related clinical trial studying Akkermansia and berberine for prediabetes is now underway in obese adults — a combination worth watching given how well berberine’s own metabolic and GLP-1 effects are documented.
- Clostridium butyricum (C. butyricum) is an anaerobic, spore-forming probiotic that dampens inflammation in early research. This strain helps produce butyrate in the gut, part of why it supports weight reduction and helps heal the gut lining. It may even help improve kidney transplant outcomes.
- Bifidobacterium infantis (B. infantis) helps treat diarrhea and reduces irritable bowel symptoms like bloating and abdominal pain across a review of 5 clinical studies. It also promotes a healthier insulin response. Use caution if you’ve been told you have SIBO, since this strain can increase methane production.
- Clostridium beijerinckii (C. beijerinckii) may help support type 2 diabetes management and metabolism, with early research also exploring its role in cancer treatment support.
- Anaerobutyricum hallii (A. hallii) has metabolic benefits including reduced inflammation, better gut health, and improved diabetes and weight management markers. It also acts as a cross-feeder, helping feed other beneficial strains and improving overall metabolism.
- Lactobacillus gasseri has three clinical trials demonstrating effectiveness for weight management [R, R, R], and remains one of the two most-studied Lactobacillus species for visceral fat reduction specifically, alongside L. plantarum.
- Lab4P is a probiotic combination that reduces body weight compared to placebo, especially in women and people who are overweight. It contains Lactobacillus acidophilus CUL60 and CUL21, Lactobacillus plantarum CUL66, Bifidobacterium bifidum CUL20, and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis CUL34.
- Lactobacillus rhamnosus + prebiotic resulted in a loss of 5.2 kg of body weight in women over 24 weeks, compared to 2.5 kg with placebo — almost all of it body fat. Men did not see the same benefit from this combination.
- Bifidobacterium animalis ssp. lactis 420 (B420) + prebiotic resulted in a 4.5% greater loss of body fat compared to placebo in overweight adults over 6 months, and reduced calorie intake by roughly 210 calories per day. The prebiotic alone didn’t move the needle.
- Bacillus subtilis + Bacillus coagulans combined at 13 million CFU reduced body weight by an average of 2 kg after 6 months. These are common strains found in fermented foods, and both now have additional support from the 2025 Scientific Reports meta-analysis above.
Figures reflect outcomes from the individual trials cited above; results vary by study population and dose, and are not directly comparable head-to-head.
Best Probiotic Brand for Weight Loss — Overall Pick
Update: my original overall pick here was Pendulum Metabolic Daily Pro, which I used personally with good results — I lost 5 pounds within 2 weeks with minimal other effort, and noticed reduced cravings and easier portion control. That specific product has since been discontinued. Based on the strain research above, my current overall pick is Akkermansia Pro GLP-1 Probiotic™, a practitioner-grade formula pairing live Akkermansia muciniphila (strain TA09) with the heat-treated BPL1 postbiotic (Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis CECT 8145).
Akkermansia Pro GLP-1 Probiotic™ is built around the same strain used in the 2026 Nature Medicine weight-maintenance trial. It’s my go-to recommendation now for anyone wanting an Akkermansia-forward formula with practitioner-grade quality control. This product is available through Fullscript and is not sold on major retail sites. You should know it should be refrigerated for best results. If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking prescription drugs, discuss it with your healthcare practitioner before use. For people with methane-predominant SIBO, this type of probiotic may increase digestive symptoms.
Pros
- Built on the strain used in the 2026 weight-maintenance trial
- Practitioner-grade sourcing and quality control
- Supports gut health broadly, not just weight
Cons
- More expensive than most probiotics
- Needs refrigeration
- Avoid it if you have methane-predominant SIBO

This probiotic strain is branded as Metagenics UltraFlora Control and gets high ratings for both weight loss and gut health benefits. It’s typically much cheaper on Fullscript than other retailers — around $46 on Amazon versus roughly $34 on Fullscript at the time of this post.
Pros
- Doesn’t require refrigeration
- Clinically studied strain for weight loss
- 1 capsule per day
Cons

Best Probiotic That Supports GLP-1

Update: Good news — Pendulum GLP-1 Pro is back in stock after being discontinued for a period. It’s back to being my recommended pick in this spot.
A GLP-1-supportive probiotic works by feeding the pathway your gut already uses to make its own GLP-1, rather than delivering a pharmaceutical dose. Strains like Akkermansia muciniphila produce postbiotics (propionate and other short-chain fatty acids) that stimulate GLP-1 production, while Clostridium butyricum produces butyrate, which does the same. Together they help build a gut ecosystem that supports both healthy weight and gut function. Pendulum GLP-1 Pro follows this same strain logic and is available through Fullscript.
Pros
- Built on well-documented GLP-1-supportive strain logic
- Back in stock after a period of discontinuation
- Available through Fullscript
Cons
- Requires a Fullscript practitioner account to order
- Avoid if you have SIBO without practitioner guidance

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best probiotic strain for weight loss?
Akkermansia muciniphila currently has the strongest 2025–2026 clinical trial support, especially for preventing weight regain after dieting. Lactobacillus gasseri, Bifidobacterium lactis B420, and the Lab4P blend also have solid randomized trial data behind them.
Is Pendulum Metabolic Daily Pro still available?
No. Pendulum Metabolic Daily Pro, which I originally reviewed and used personally, has been discontinued — Akkermansia Pro GLP-1 Probiotic™ or Metagenics UltraFlora Control are good Akkermansia-forward alternatives. Pendulum GLP-1 Pro was also discontinued for a period but is back in stock and remains my recommended pick for GLP-1 support.
How long does it take for probiotics to help with weight loss?
Research shows it typically takes at least 12 weeks to see a measurable decrease in body weight from probiotic use, with about 40% of users seeing more than a 5% loss of body weight over roughly 6 months. Akkermansia-based probiotics may work somewhat faster, especially for people who start with low baseline levels of that strain.
Can probiotics help prevent weight regain after dieting?
Yes. A 2026 randomized controlled trial in Nature Medicine found that adults taking pasteurized Akkermansia muciniphila during a 24-week weight-maintenance phase regained significantly less weight than those on placebo, and were far more likely to keep losing weight during maintenance.
Do probiotics work for weight loss in everyone?
Not equally. A 2025 study in Cell Metabolism found Akkermansia supplementation worked best in people with low baseline levels of that bacteria, with little added benefit for those who already had healthy levels. Strain, dose, and individual gut microbiome composition all affect results.
Are there any probiotic strains that can cause weight gain?
Lactobacillus acidophilus taken on its own may promote weight gain in some people, since it doesn’t effectively break down glucose or fructose. This is one reason strain selection matters more than simply taking “a probiotic.”
