Healthy Holiday Mocktails: 3 Tasty Recipes for a Happy Christmas

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The holiday season is filled with joy, celebration, and countless opportunities to raise a glass. But what if you could toast to the season while actually supporting your health instead of compromising it? These three no sugar added, nutrient-rich mocktails offer all the festive spirit without the alcohol or sugar crash.

Why Skip the Alcohol This Holiday Season?

While alcohol has become synonymous with celebration, the science tells a different story about its impact on our health:

Disrupts Blood Sugar Balance: Alcohol causes blood sugar spikes or dips followed by energy crashes, leaving you tired, irritable, and craving more sugar. During the holidays when treats are everywhere, this rollercoaster can derail your health goals completely.

Impairs Sleep Quality: Even though alcohol might make you feel drowsy, it significantly disrupts REM sleep and deep sleep cycles. Poor sleep means weakened immunity, increased cravings, poor mood, and less energy for holiday activities.

Increases Inflammation: Alcohol triggers many kinds of inflammatory responses throughout the body, particularly in the gut. This can worsen digestive issues, joint pain, and even skin problems right when you want to look and feel your best.

Depletes Essential Nutrients: Alcohol consumption strips your body of B vitamins, zinc, magnesium, vitamin C, and other critical nutrients needed for energy, immune function, and stress management.

Impacts Hormones: Alcohol disrupts hormone balance, affecting everything from stress hormones to sex hormones, which can impact mood, weight, and overall wellbeing. For example, alcohol increases estrogen and this is part of why people may gain weight over the holidays.

Weakens Immune Function: During cold and flu season, alcohol suppresses your immune system for up to 24 hours after drinking,  making you more vulnerable to illness.

The good news? You don’t have to choose between celebration and health. These mocktails are designed to be enjoyed during all your favorite holiday moments.

1. Cranberry Rosemary Sparkler

This elegant mocktail combines tart cranberry with aromatic rosemary for a sophisticated drink that looks stunning and tastes even better. With only 3 grams of carbohydrates, this mocktail is great for people on a low carbohydrate diet and even for those on a ketogenic diet.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 2 sprigs fresh rosemary (1 for muddling, 1 for garnish)
  • Juice of 1/2 lime
  • 1 cup sparkling mineral water
  • Ice
  • Optional: 2-3 drops liquid stevia or monk fruit (if you prefer sweeter)

Instructions:

  1. In a glass, muddle the cranberries and one rosemary sprig together to release the flavors. I use a mortar and pestle to do this.
  2. Add lime juice and sweetener if using
  3. Fill glass with ice
  4. Top with sparkling water and stir gently
  5. Garnish with fresh rosemary sprig and a few whole cranberries

Health Benefits: Cranberries are packed with antioxidants and support urinary tract health. Rosemary contains compounds that support brain function and reduce inflammation.

2. Spiced Apple Cider Mocktail

Two versions of spiced cider mocktail including an easy chilled spiced cider mocktail and a warm spiced cider mocktail by The Healthy RD

Warm, comforting, and bursting with holiday spices, this mocktail is like a hug in a mug. Perfect for cold winter evenings. If you have diabetes, please be mindful that the warm cocktail version has 30 grams of carbohydrates. A good low carb alternative to the apple cider is an Ollipop or Poppi drink as a substitute for the cider. This cold version has 7 grams net carbohydrates.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup unsweetened organic apple cider (or fresh pressed apple juice with no added sugar)-use Ollipop Crisp Apple or a Lemon-Lime Poppi drink for lower total carbohydrate option.
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 whole cloves
  • 1 star anise
  • 1/4 teaspoon fresh grated ginger
  • Splash of sparkling water (optional, for fizz)
  • Orange slice for garnish

Instructions:

  1. In a small pot, gently warm the apple cider with cinnamon stick, cloves, star anise, and ginger
  2. Simmer on low for 5-7 minutes to infuse the spices (don’t boil)
  3. Strain into a mug or heat-safe glass
  4. Add a splash of sparkling water if desired
  5. Garnish with an orange slice and cinnamon stick

Low carb option: in a cocktail glass, mix together 1 can of Crisp Apple Ollipop, 1 star anise, 2 cloves, and add 1 cinnamon stick and orange slice for a garnish. This is the super easy version that also has a lot of healthy prebiotic fiber from the Ollipop.

Health Benefits: Cinnamon helps regulate blood sugar, ginger aids digestion and reduces inflammation, and cloves contain powerful antioxidants. The natural sweetness comes from the apple cider itself with no added sugars.

3. Pomegranate Mint Fizz

Vibrant, refreshing, and visually stunning, this mocktail brings a pop of color and antioxidants to any holiday table. This fancy mocktail has only 8 grams of total carbohydrate and it is my personal favorite mocktail.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup fresh pomegranate juice (from about 1/2 pomegranate)
  • 6-8 fresh mint leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon diced lemongrass, muddled
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1 cup sparkling mineral water
  • Ice
  • Pomegranate arils and mint sprig for garnish

Instructions:

  1. In a cocktail shaker or mortar and pestle, muddle mint leaves gently to release oils
  2. Add pomegranate juice and lemon juice to your cocktail glass
  3. Fill glass with ice
  4. Top with sparkling water and stir
  5. Garnish with pomegranate arils and a mint sprig

Health Benefits: Pomegranates are one of the most antioxidant-rich fruits on the planet, supporting heart health and reducing inflammation. They are a natural source of anti-aging urolithin A. Mint aids digestion and adds a refreshing element that’s perfect after heavy holiday meals.
