Cilantro Oil Detoxification Benefits

We need powerful plants more than ever to help us stay healthy. Cilantro oil is king of natural plant detoxification when it comes to heavy metals.  The ancient Egyptians knew of cilantro’s power and science is demonstrating its benefits today.

Sometimes, knowledge of food informs our taste buds. If we know the benefits, it makes it much easier to grab it, put it on our plate, and learn new ways to make it fit into our lives.

The first time I sat down and REALLY ate cilantro was after learning about its amazing health attributes.

I ate it as a salad (no really, I did), and since then, I do this often and really enjoy it. It is delicious, by the way, you should try it.

I realize this isnt’ always practical.  That is why cilantro oil can be a helpful tool to help cleanse the body.

Cilantro History and Uses

Part of the carrot and parsley family known as Apiaceae, cilantro is one of about 3,700 different species. It’s use dates back at least to 5000 BC; seeds of coriander were found in Egyptian tombs.

Cilantro’s name is interchangeable with its seed form, coriander, but the seed has a drastically different flavor profile and also different health qualities.

Cilantro, as with most vegetables and herbs, helps reduce the trifecta of health problems today: blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol. And supports a healthy metabolism.

It also may help with sleep and generally help keep cells healthier by providing lots of trace nutrients and vitamins. This isn’t news to anyone familiar with the power of plants.

You might be wondering what made me eat a salad-sized amount of cilantro? Heavy metal toxins. They are everywhere.

No, I’m not overly concerned; I’m being realistic.

Heavy Metal Toxins

Don’t think mercury is a problem for you?

Here is a list of places you may silently be getting mercury (1):

  • Some cosmetics, including skin whitening agents
  • Prolonged antibiotics (due to enhanced uptake)
  • Silver dental fillings (50% mercury) slowly enter your bloodstream
  • Removal of fillings
  • Flu shots
  • Eating fish
  • Rivers, lakes and oceans
  • School laboratories
  • Soda (2)
  • Air pollution
  • High fructose corn syrup ingredient

Exposures are estimated to be higher than ever, due to increased numbers of chemicals in the environment (3).

However, long-term, low levels of exposure are very unlikely to get picked up at your doctor’s office due to the slow onset of symptoms.

Mercury Toxicity Symptoms

Mercury may cause or contribute to:

  • Fatigue
  • Digestive distress
  • Reduced metabolism of fat
  • Aching joints
  • Depression
  • Increased blood sugar
  • Female reproductive problems
  • Cardiovascular damage
  • Memory and nerve damage
  • Brain disorders like Alzheimer’s disease

Mercury is used in factories for the production of numerous products and is emitted from coal-burning.  Deposited directly into your water and soil.  You’re welcome.

How Do We Know If We Have Too Much Mercury?

It really comes down to how much the body absorbs and our ability to remove it from our systems.

The challenge is this:  Heavy metals sequester in body tissues, making blood tests not fully reliable. So, we have no clear answer to how many are exposed to it and to what degree it affects our short and long term health (4).

However, from reports of detoxification of heavy metals, the results can be nothing short of impressive.

Cilantro Reduces Heavy Metals In The Body

Take this case for example. A man had mercury fillings removed.  The following day, he had body scans, and mercury was detected via imaging in ALL of his organs.

He ate cilantro 4 times a day for two weeks, along with fish oil, and his mercury toxicity was resolved. His gingival health also improved (5).

Mercury toxicity makes antibiotics not work.  Eleven patients with drug-resistant ear infections and mercury toxicity were given cilantro in capsules.  The otherwise untreatable infections were treated effectively almost immediately with the addition of cilantro (6).

In rats with lead poisoning, cilantro safely lowered lead levels and improved liver function (7).

Cilantro, given to rats, was also able to prevent lead from depositing into the body’s tissues (8).

Holistic practitioners often recommend combining chlorella with cilantro to improve removal of heavy metals from the body.

Cilantro For Anxiety and Nerve Conditions

Cilantro, in animal testing, reduced anxiety symptoms and relaxed muscles (9, 10).

The main component of cilantro essential oil is linalool (also has a lot of 2-decanol), which interestingly, is a main component of lavender (11).  Lavender is well-known for its ability to reduce anxiety.

Nature gets it right so many times over.

Cilantro, as part of a spice-rich diet, may protect nerves from degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease (12).

Cilantro May Help Your Dry Skin

This active compound of the cilantro essential oil was able to reduce dry skin and rehydrated the skin while reducing inflammation (13).

Cilantro May Help Fight Infectious Organisms

Cilantro  oil may reduce growth of Listeria in foods, an infectious bacteria in food and water (14(15).

In a lab setting, cilantro had antifungal activity against Candida spp. (16).

Cilantro Essential Oil

Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) cilantro essential oil has 2 main constituents: linalool and 2-decanal, plus many other healthful components. Interestingly, linalool is also rich in lavender, which has calming effects too.  Click here for ways to get CPTG oils.

An expert in essential oils as well as experienced dietitian, @RiseUpHealth, Calene VanNoy, RD, states “I love to eat fresh salsa with cilantro, but often don’t have the time to make it. Adding a drop of doTERRA cilantro essential oil to my store-bought salsa really kicks it up a notch.

I’ve also used cilantro after having dental work done on old fillings.  I know they can’t suck all the metal up with their little machine and I end up swallowing some.  It’s convenient and reassuring to go home and take a couple drops of cilantro essential oil to help my body’s ability to detox itself of those heavy metals.”

Cilantro Oil Tips Before Using

  • Use only Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils.  Many companies claim to be pure or even organic, but aren’t safe for consumption.
  • No single foods or supplemental essential oil will fix the ravages of an overall poor quality diet.
  • Cilantro or cilantro oil, eaten along with a lot of other vegetables and whole foods, may help cleanse the body of heavy metals and other toxins.
  • Cilantro has high amounts of antioxidants, making it a great addition to your day to help protect your body from pollutants as well.
  • Use of supplemental cilantro essential oils contributes a boost of antioxidants and may help detoxify the body
  • Due to its calming effects, cilantro oil can be diffused to promote restful sleep
  • As with any food, allergies and sensitivities can occur
  • If you take warfarin, check with your healthcare provider before changing your diet

  3. This article is really helpful thank you so much ?I have around 5 Mercury fillings and it’s been dripping into my body for a few years now . I didn’t know it was Mercury until my Herbalist told me . I have all the symptoms you mention. I went to my doctor last year and they almost laughed me out of the room and said they don’t agree with it and they refused to test me . So I’m pretty much doing it all by myself. Vegan diet and milk thistle and lots of cilantro oil which I put in food and into my skin on my wrists at night . Detox symptoms can be quite bad and I wake up at night with head pressure and body aches but once up and walking it seems to get better .Im looking into having these fillings out but it’s so expensive!

    1. I’m so sorry you have struggled so much! Glad to hear you are getting some better! Have you looked into chlorella? Also, make absolutely sure you are getting enough protein because that is important in the process too. Good luck Melaina!
